These brave soldiers suffered a great deal—first with their facial wounds and in the subsequent reconstruction of their faces. Plastic surgery on this scale was an evolving art and made their lives somewhat easier—though not always. Many were rejected by their families because of the dramatic nature of their wounds. The families couldn’t accustom themselves to the facial changes. The US National Institutes Of Health has a film of one French workshop that made masks for some of these wounded warriors.
